[WG] WoWS Is Taking Off

The first WoWS demo took place during E3 and consisted of two 6 vs 6 battles. Players fought US and Japanese destroyers, cruisers, battleships, and carriers.

The scale of action was epic with maps up 100 km in length and width with multiple islands. And there is reason to go large, because battleships (like demoed North Carolina) had effective range up to 40km.

Battles usually began with recon and fighter planes taking off from cruisers and carriers to locate the enemies. While both sides are approaching one another it's time to get a closer look at nicely modeled ships, all based on real-life materials. The attention to detail is impressive, however the decks did look a bit empty without crews dashing about. Well, this is pre-alpha.

Balance is classical: rock - paper - scissors.

Battleships with their heavy but slow guns are weak in close combat, and can't defend against destroyers which are vulnerable against cruisers which have little to withstand battleships' competition.

As for carriers, well, they have no guns worth mentioning. Carriers have a game of their own, using RTS-like UI to control their aerial forces. There is no control of single aircraft of course (go play WoWP), orders are given to entire units.

The goal of the battle is to capture and defend the central area. Players control only main armament - the rest of the guns are automated.

Aiming is done using ballistic reticle that make camera follow shell's trajectory. The trick is to choose the right distance and predict the movement of your enemy so as to strike it hard and not waste your ammo and loading time.

HP bars are in place just like in WoT.

Destroyers are using torpedos which are .. surprised .. powerful. Underwater hits lead to decrease of floatage bar (water incoming!).

Both 10-minute battles were rather fast and dynamic. Who said ships are slowpokes. One of the battles ended with last survived carrier being destroyed by concentrated fire of 2 cruisers and 1 battleship.

All in all it didn't like like swimming tanks, lots of things work differently. The demoed CTF battles took place in the south Pacific and near Orkney islands.

Ready for beta?

  8. Been ready for my hole life!
    What about Alpha?
I think Warships would be as good as WOT.

  10. Can't wait to play this, I wonder if WoWS is more tactical than WoT. (And let's hope the kids stay with WoT, shall we?)

    1. This game is even more team worked reliant than WoT. No 1 ship can rule the waves.

  13. I AM ready for beta and waiting for sooo long...

I think you make mistake somewhere: 100 sq km, being 100km^2 is only 10km x 10km.

    CTF... Please make convoy mode.

RTS mode for carriers only? Wait, everyone was to be able to use every mode, it was promised (KGB said that). Map is even more important on sea than on land, make at lest full screen minimap activated with a key like on some WoT mods. Still better if you make multimonitor support and put map on second screen. Also, IDK if it is in the game but torpedo tracers on minimap would be a big help and prevent some accidental TKs (all tracers in range for allied, only ones spotted for enemy - you can make torpedo spotting mechanism similar to spotting ships).

  14. If you did make it possible for people to play it a little at E3, and E3 is now gone, why not show us some gameplay videos as well?

Regardless, the infos were appreciated Ovi.

  16. This entry is plagiarizing Dan Stapleton's preview of WoWS: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/06/11/e3-2013-world-of-warships-shows-up-on-the-radar

I expected better of you, Overlord.

  17. 100sq km is only 10 km per 10 km. It was supposed to be bigger.

    2. Yeah, I realize that now.

Also, the North American WoWs forums have cracked quite a bit of the text shown on the image, namely all of the ship names on Team 2 aside from the vessel between the North Carolina and New Mexico (we think it's a version of the Fuso, with a year in parentheses coming after).

Alpha is expected later this year.

  25. Say... Team 1 has 15 matchmaker slots, but Team 2 only has 13.5! Is this loading screen a placeholder, showing only as many players as the WoT and WoWp player lists can?

  28. Looking at the screenshot (on the airplane), it appears to be 15 versus 15. What happened to the information given to us in the World of Warships forum regarding the team size being larger?

  29. Is there a video of the demo? If the top speed of ships is about 50 km/h, and they start 100 km apart, how do ships even make contact in 10 minutes?

  30. Ovi can I be on the beta testers list? I'm good tester :-)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am waiting for WoWS for long already :)
I would like to test with you Dev's in early Closed Beta ;)
Game sounds cool for me and it seems to be very good. Ye, as I am playing WoT, I am rarely playing WoWP, but I am sure that I will play WoWS, since I have never played good naval sim game.
I hope that we will meet on battlefield one day, or maybe even in real life ;)

Please include me in the testing if you can???

I am really looking forward to this!

  34. sounds great. still a little bummed out by the lack of submarines but either way i'll have some fun. however how do ships that had multiple 'main armaments' like the yamato with its 9x 18 inch guns and then 6x (or 12x depending on year) 6 inch guns function in game? are the smaller guns automated or will they be part of the player controlled battery?
