[WoTB] Blitz Matchmaker

World of Tanks Blitz uses basically the same matchmaking system from the PC version of the game, only slightly optimized for faster performance and 7vs7 battles.

First, it would be good to watch this video for the PC version.

  • There are no particular restrictions on vehicle nation, class, tier, etc. Same as on PC.
  • MM-ing spread is 2 tiers for most of the vehicle tiers, apart from tiers 1 and 2. Tier 1 can only play with tiers 1 and 2, tier 2 can play with tiers 1, 2, 3. 
  • Platooned players are matched based on highest tier in platoon.
  • Balance weights for all classes in Blitz are the same, i.e tier 7 mediums, heavies and tank destroyers all have the same balance weights. 
  • Premium tanks may have preferential matchmaking, eg A-32 can only play against tier 3-5 vehicles, Pz IV Hydro, KV-220, M4A2E4 - only against tiers 3-6, Panther M10 - against tiers 5-8, KV-5 - against tiers 6-9.

Ideally, matchmaker tries to create full 7vs7 battles, ensuring that top 3 vehicles in both teams are of the same tier, and balance "weights" of both teams are equal.

The longer the wait time in the queue, the softer matchmaker requirements become. The requirements change twice - after 30+ and 60+ seconds in the queue.

After 60+ seconds for one of the waiting players matchmaker would try to create battles with less players on the team where minimal size is 3, i.e. 3vs3 battles. In such battles, at least 2 top vehicles are to be on the same tier, while matchmaking "weight" difference between the team can go up to 10%.

Unfortunately, there are some rare bugs which carried over from the PC version to Blitz, and in Blitz they are reproduced more frequently:

Such battles, where top 2 equal tier requirement is not enforced, could be created after 60+ seconds of wait time for one of the queued players. We will be monitoring the situation and trying to fix this.

After 5 min wait time, player is kicked out of the queue to garage due to timeout. 


  1. Slightly off-topic:

    I saw you being referred by someone on EU forums as (verbatim quote) "probably in the top 10 decision makers at WG". While I certainly wouldn't mind that, I doubt it's true (no disrespect meant).

    So what exactly do you do at WG now? I can see on your LinkedIn profile that you're "Producer of Mobile", so I guess this means work on WoT Blitz, but I understand this is mostly a conversion job, not "decision maker" position when it comes to general gameplay stuff in WoT for PCs.


    1. WG is huge company now with over 3k employees (there were about 100 when I joined).
      Right now it's pretty decentralised, so it would be hard to come up with top 10 global decision makers. Speaking of particular games, I definitely won't be on the top list for WoT PC, since I don't work on the project for quite some time. As for WoT Blitz and other mobile projects, I'm definitely on the top 10 chart. :) Producer role here at WG basically means global supervision of the product, so I'm responsible for everything and nothing at the same time.

    Just one question.
    When will this game update? Will it have the same schedule like the PC version? Every 2 ish months for new content?

    1. M4A2E4 can play with tiers 3-6.

      Update cycle will be about 1.5-2 months. Next major update is 1.2 - due in August.

    2. Any chance to get some preview on your plans for 1.2 and later? For WoT we also know that T8 light tanks are coming and Havoc.

      BTW, is Europe sharing a server with Russia? I get Russian players nearly every game.

    3. 1. I can share a few things but it's not 100% confirmed. In 1.2 we will have one new map (desert setting), new battle results screen with detailed info and possibility to browse player profiles, 6 prem tanks tier 6-8, ability to quickly enable/disable auto-aim in both sniper and arcade modes.
      2. A lot of Russians joined EU server when we started the softlaunch on EU. Looks like some of them stayed even after dedicated RUssian server went live.

      Looking forward to the new autoaim, because it really helps in general but drives me mad when the enemy drives behind a house at the wrong moment and I hit only the wall.

    5. Yup, can be annoying. With a new system its not a problem since you can disengage autoaim quickly.

  5. Any news on the android version? Will there be an extra alpha or beta testing? Looking forward to test it.

    1. There will be some sort of testing for sure. Most likely some sort of supertest.
