I know it's a bit late, but still. WoWP 4.0 or 0.4.0 or whatever has been released for NA, EU, and RU cbt servers. It is a major update the team has been working on for a couple of months. The quintessence of the update are, for sure, new controls (new WoT-like mouse with assault mode), improved render, and updated HUD (effective performance modes and more).
So if you have been away for some time, I advise you to download the update (provided that you have got the beta access ofc) and check out the new stuff.
In case you have already had an opportunity to get acquainted with the update, feel free to come up with some feedback on forums or here (minding the NDA :)).

Yay, a reason to come back! ;)
ReplyDeleteBtw: are You planing to prowide double scroll support? I have a R.A.T. series mouse with additional scroll under the thumb, but so far there was no real use for it, when it would be nice to put z throttle on one scroll, and zoom on the other :)
Haven't considered this so far. Most likely after release.
DeleteI have been disappointed bu this "major" update in new ways
ReplyDeletethe "new render" is nowhere near what you showed on this blog a week ago, even a very hi setting
the new mouse control scheme has issues
the HUD is a mess
overlord, just read the WoWp CBT forums, you seem to be out of touch with the real update
I do play the actual game - this one I play mostly on RU side. There are some issues with 4.0 that spoil the overall impression to some extent - planning to fix it in the upcoming 2 minor patches.
DeleteThe changes to the controls are a huge step forward. +1 for that.
DeleteI think that the major drawback of WoWP compared to War Thunder will always be the damage model. Planes don't have "hitpoints", the system works to some extent in World of Tanks, since it would be frustrating to die in 1 hit, but air combat is a completely different matter, especially since we are not talking about 120mm guns but about .50 cal machineguns and 20mm cannons. As long as you have a hitpoint system WoWP will always feel like a cartoony ripoff.
ReplyDeleteCan't say that I do agree on the point. In WT, if we take it as example, the entire damage model is far more unpredictable than in WOWP. In some cases you die instantly being one-shotted, in another you need to continuously fire at some biplane to shoot it down. That frustrates me personally. HP give more predictability.
Deleteyou can still die in shot, even in a plane
Deletea hit from a canon directly into the cockpit - death
explosive shot into a wing, wing gets ripped of - death
IL-2's had 2x23mm cannons that could rip tanks apart
P-63 AirCobra has a 37mm cannon
some BF 109's and FW 190's variants had both 20 and 30mm cannons
@overlod
Deleteregarding firing at bliplanes in WT
the "issue" is that planes in WT have fixed convergence of wing mounted weapons and it's not automatically adjusted like you did in WoWp
the problem of missing is that you fire at a biplane inside the convergence point and not at the distance of the convergence point
and being so, biplanes have way smaller width wing tip to wing tip than most of the distance between the wing weapons mounted our your plane
the trick is, when a plane gets inside you convergence cone, to steer your plane so one or your wings has a direct axis to the enemy - you need to shift your axis
it's tricky, but not undoable
@zMe ul
DeleteIn Arcade mode there is some autoconvergence, when your crosshair turns red then it is set to the target's distance. I don't know how effectively is this working (how long you need to hover your crosshair on the target (or on the lead-point), or do you need to hover it at all).
I think this unpredictability is caused by hits on "non vital parts", or inconsistency in the netcode/hitdetection/server-client snyc.
@Overlord
The HP system is more predictable, but suitable only for arcade(ish) games. I think this is the main difference between WT and WoWp. WoWp is only arcade (should be fun, fast in/fast out). WT has more serious simulator like features (HB,FRB), so the module damage system is viable there.
FYI: I like WoWp's Research system more (more customization). (But WT's crew concept is good also :)).
Lh.
It is not automatically adjusted in WoWP, it's pre-determined. The thing is that in WT it happens with any plane, including some high tier bombers. In general for me the game is totally unpredictable in terms of damage and outcome, I don't feel like I do anything crucial in battle.
DeleteI think it is not unpredictable, just not displayed directly. So the player need some common sense, or intuition to assess the damage he/she did, like IRL.
Delete(If I am correct, then WT divided the planes to around 10 main component (wings, fuselage, engine, tail, aileron, elevator, pilot :), etc.), and each has a HP pool. When one of this pool is depleted, then the plane is destroyed. So there are a HP system too, just invisible :)).
Lh.
I think a good example is the Russian premium Catalina you can buy in WT, at tier 1 you will often face biplanes with dual mgs which have a hard time hurting you when they pour round after round into your fuselage. However they can also go for the engines or wings and you will go down quickly. A few tiers later you face stuff like the 4x20mm armed Beaufighter, a quick burst from it literally disintegrates fighters and medium bombers, it's a completely whole new experience when compared to mgs. Now in the WoWP alpha/beta I played low tier piston engined fighters and high tier cannon-armed jets. And at no point did I ever get the same power rush that I felt when I switched to cannons in WT. In WoWP everything is just a hitpoint bar, like in an mmo, in WT however the effect of your guns is a whole lot more satisfying and this really adds to the game's atmosphere. I think ultimately WoWP and WT will both have their fans, to me the added realism of WT's gunplay is more appealing, while on the other hand I cannot imagine a realistic damage model for their ground combat.
Delete@Lefthand
Deleteno there is not, WT does not have auto-convergence even in arcade mode
afaik, in arcade, convergence cannot be manually set - it was doable before
@overlord
"predetermined" ??? the hell does that mean
if you go with MGs after a heavy bomber, well bombers are heavy armored and you need a lot of rounds to eat that armor away
vs regular fighters, MGs are quite good, a 6 setup MGs can wreak havoc on fighters because of their fast reload
I personally prefer MG mounted fighters than cannons on the wings
planes with cannons mounted axially are another story - long live AirCobras :)
Pre-determined means fixed but dependent on a particular plane.
DeleteYeah, that armour thing brings up another issue with bombers allowing them to play very aggressive performing functions of heavy fighters with boom&zoom tactics.
very few bombers have controllable guns, other than defensive turrets
Deletebut when you kill a jet with your Tu-2, well .. that's a joy :)
If you want a simulator, play a simulator. There are plenty of good ones on the market. I've been in WoWP since alpha, there has never been a claim or a plan to make it a serious simulator. I'd be disappointed if they did.
DeleteI've been away, but I look forward to trying out the new update.
Nice to hear that, don't forget to post your feedback afterwards.
DeleteJust installed 4.0 and played a few battles. Without breaking any NDA I can say, that the new renderer is really way better.
DeleteCouldn't stop looking at my planes from the outside. All in all quite enjoyable and a leap forward. Only the cockpit view is a little too far zoomed out for my taste, but all in all I had to force myself to stop playing, because I have to take a look at the second WoT test server version ^^
Ok, thx

C'mon, have you ever thought WoWP will be a sim-game? It is an arcade and this is good. WoWP is MMO by design and thus must be simple enough.

ReplyDeleteHey overlord I really like the new graphics and rendering system and such you made a big improvement on that however I still feel like the flight model is still a bit unresponsive (slight lagg so to speak) And I think if the plane would respond to your controls faster it would make the game more fun by allowing you to pull maneuvers faster this is an arcade game after all. Also will we see proper bomber in this game and bigger maps similar to WT?
ReplyDeleteGreat job so far you are catching hopefully you will overtake WT :)
We are working on bigger maps already, however this part belongs to research side of things - so you can't estimate it reliably.
DeleteAs for bombers - never say never. :)
RMS_Gigantic reporting in. This reply has successfully piqued my interest!
DeleteOn the subject of map sizes, are we talking about 40-60 km squares like World of Warships?
On the subject of bombers, I just want to say that if Wargaming made the Doolittle Raid modifications to the B-25 a premium plane, I would by all means get it. I would love to see those planes recreated via Wargaming's research!
War Thunder is a far better game than WOWP could ever hope to be. WG deserves no more money after the Rise of the Americas event fiascos.
ReplyDeletewhat events now?
DeleteVector03,
Deleteprime time shift? Or ?
Overlord I was just wondering when another large group of players will be let in to play the closed beta, because as of now the Pre-battle menu takes way to long because there are never enough people on at one time. I really want to be able to sit down and play a few quick battles but instead I sit there forever trying to get into a single game. Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks
ReplyDeleteYes, we are planning to invite more players after we release some required minor patches for 4.0.
Deletetoo bad this game is still a disaster
ReplyDeletecontrols are the worst of all games i have ever played
graphics are mediocre and the maps are tiny
but the most important thing is
this game has absolutely no players and guess why....
Because we don't invite new players to the beta at this stage.
Deleteand the already invited players dont play this game anymore
DeleteJust logged in to check and number of players online and to ask if it is the usual number, uhm ... really wasn't expecting that
DeleteIs EU cb just for show or you intend to get any data from it, lulz
Is there an Elo matchmaker yet?
ReplyDeleteI got sick of being totally ineffective against better players. WoT has a flat enough skill curve that an average player can hurt a good player. The lack of ability to shoot to your rear means that once someone is on your six in WoWP you are boned. The good players just fly around owning.
It might get better on release with enough players to spread the skill more thinly. But right now its frustrating and very hard to learn to be better since most players are what will end up as above average.
WG are too "thick" to understand the need of an ELO based MM
Deleteso, no ... you won't ever see one for WG games
Overlord, take a time in the CB forums about this upgrade. IMHO it is NOT as successfull as you expect...
ReplyDeletelike all the WG stuff
Deletethey dont listen to the community so they ll get their feedback from the community
WG is the worst company 2011/2012/2013 and were so extremely lucky with WoT because the game itself is mediocre only the idea is good
Exactly right. WG was lucky there weren't any other online pvp tank games that were any good at all. Eventually War Thunder will have tanks and ships, and the party will be over for WG. I can't wait tbh, since they really have been a terrible company up to this point, treating their customers like complete crap.
DeleteI wouldnt say they treat us like crap, but a lot of things could be improved.
DeleteFrom better communication about CW-Status here in EU, to more general interaction to what can and should be changed or added to the game, to a better support to things like the super cups.
I am playing the Super 6 Cup at the moment, and man that was a bad support. The servers couldnt handle the cup-matches (lag spikes etc.), and they had only like 2 ppl in the staff (thats a joke, with such a big community and participation in these events. you make millions in a week with this game, and cant hire enough ppl to make a smooth event hundreds of clans/companys are looking forward to), to handle the reports. It was a mess, and you got a LOT of flak for it, and rightfully so. I heard the events before were even worse at times.
Hope tomorrow will be better.
have you seen what Sony did for PlanetSide 2?
Deletethey allowed players to vote on what the dev team should focus, in stages
what is of immediate importance to the game and what can take a back seat
no, WG has already laid out the plans and no one will change them
There is a new game in production called Star Citizen made by Chris Roberts (Wing Commander/Freelancer). They started with Kickstarter financing, and Roberts did a very interesting interview about how they started with the game, what they want to achieve, and how they want to do that.
DeleteHe says in that interview that player interaction is crucial.
A very interesting interview for any developer btw.
He says: You need to have a vision of the game, but because of this vision its often hard to stay open for player input.
You cant do all the player wants. You need a clear vision of the game, and the influence of the player to do it the right way.

Interview is in german, but maybe you can use google translator http://www.gamestar.de/spiele/star-citizen-squadron-42/artikel/star_cititzen,48820,3008929.html

ReplyDeleteNinjaed because of danger of nerfhammer
Deletea lot better after 4.0
ReplyDeleteI love the new control system, that's why i started playing wowp now. And i will play it more, wont stop there. But there are problems with the stability of the game once in a while. The game crashed couple times in about 3 hours, and it's heavier than WoT. It took half of my ram (2/4gb) before it crashed. The game process didn't want to shutdown, so i just restarted the whole computer.
ReplyDelete[WoWP] Big hit! But we didn't penetrate their armor.
ReplyDeleteIn wowp can you invert your mouse controls? Most other flight games have that function
ReplyDeleteThis is a first - Overlord complaining about 0 damage hits in another game... lol
ReplyDeleteIn regards to this blog post, as a WoWP beta tester I can honestly say without leaking any information that the new WoT-like mouse controls are a MUCH more attractive step forward and easier to use then when I first began testing WoWP. IMO, I can now handle the planes easier here then in WarThunder.
ReplyDeleteThis is a big improvement, congrats WG! =D
I was really supriced when i logged in after 2 months. You greatly improved this game. But i still feel i dont play game with planes - its like WoT in air.
ReplyDeleteI am common player, but even after upgrade, i dont see point of playing WoWp oven on arcade field.
Main issues (my opinion):
Controls (you did great improvements, but..)
HP system
No flight models (i dont want to play still same plane, but it feels like)
No bombers
To WoT - you lost lot of veteran paying customers. WG earn milions, but even after those years, you wasnt able to put huge gameplay difference. Its boring to play random 15vs15 kill´em all game.
Now, people who research for “AAA,”windows 7 home premium full version for instance, will see a listing of sponsored search benefits after they look for that automobile services windows 7 family pack firm inside of Home windows eight.1. Consumers will begin to see the same benefits if they search for “AAA” at Bing.com or Yahoo, Microsoft mentioned in a very website write-up.
