He went down with Scurvy shortly after they descended the Beardmore Glacier, and was dragged by the two others in the party (both Royal Navy Petty Officers) for 70 of the last 100 miles (the rest being done by a dog-sled rescue party sent out after one of the POs walked the rest of the way in). This rescue was technical in violation of Evan's own orders, but he never complained. I found that hard to believe, I've read an account from HMS Sheffield during the Battle of the Barrents sea that describes gunning down the sailors manning the torpedo tubes on the Friedrich Eckoldt with the Pompoms.
